Panama-Buena Vista Union School District (PBVUSD) is a growing district in southwest Bakersfield.

The district extends 15 miles south to Copus Road, north to Stockdale Highway, east to Hughes Lane and west to Interstate 5.

Presently, the district is about 20 percent built out. PBVUSD has 16 elementary schools and four junior high schools.

Stonecreek, the district's fifth junior high, will open next school year (2006-2007).

Our present student population is 15,400, and with 31,000 homes to be built in our district in the next few years, there is tremendous potential for growth.

Our district has produced 13 California Distinguished Schools. They are Buena Vista; Castle; Hart; Laurelglen; Loudon; Lum; McAuliffe; Reagan; Sandrini; Seibert; Stockdale; and Tevis Junior High School.

Stockdale is also a National Blue Ribbon School. Berkshire and Panama Elementary each have the opportunity to be named Distinguished Schools this year if their Distinguished School document is validated by a visitation team who will visit these schools in the next couple of weeks.

PBVUSD is a district that promotes high standards in instruction through its ongoing staff development opportunities for teachers. These opportunities are offered immediately before the school year begins, during the school year, and in the summer.

The use of state and board approved standards aligned textbooks provide our teachers and students with appropriate materials that are used in the classroom on a daily basis.

Presently we have about 740 full time and 60 part time certificated employees and about 65 certificated support staff. Our classified staff includes 164 full time employees, 657 part time staff, and 61 full time support staff.

And, as I mentioned earlier, we are still growing.

Our students not only are provided with an excellent academic/classroom experience, but our outstanding music program for grades five through eight, which includes band, orchestra and vocal music. Our athletic program provides a large number of our students opportunities to compete in football, volleyball, basketball and track. Many of our students also compete in school, district and county events, which include Oral Language Festival, Spelling Bee, Speech Contests, Math Counts, Math Field Day and Headliners.

Each day, I believe the entire Panama-Buena Vista School District community does its best to live up to our motto of Excellence in Education.
