What is the purpose of your club/organization? The society's principle objective is to preserve the heritage of Kern County through publications, placing and maintenance of landmark plaques at important historical sites, and by the scheduling of outstanding speakers at the monthly meetings. The organization was a parent sponsor of the Kern County Museum.
What is your typical member profile?: Membership is open to all people who are interested in history, and Kern County history in particular. Our current membership includes persons from many diverse occupations, as well as retired people, and both longtime residents and newcomers.
How do you enrich the quality of life in Bakersfield? Preservation of Kern County's heritage is the society's principle goal. Especially noteworthy are the publications of the KCHS –– a long line of brocures and books –– invaluable in their coverage of early days and early activities, as well as in their awareness of the relation of history to current living. In addition to making this outstanding material available to the public, this nonprofit organization has sponsored the placing of landmark plaques throughout the county; has worked with the State Division of Parks and Recreation in the restoration of Fort Tejon, has cooperated throughout the years with the Chamber of Commerce and Boards of Trade to help ensure high standards in publicity pamphlets; and is the parent sponsor of the Kern County Museum, which features a 16-acre site that includes historic structures ranging from 1868 through 1936. Members receive the society's illustrated quarterly, "Historic Kern," and the "Kern Grapevine," a monthly newsletter that gives information about coming events.
What sets you apart from other clubs in town? We are not merely a social organization, but are involved with education, community service and maintaining the heritage of Kern County.
What would you say to people interested in joining? Attend one of our programs and meet other members/people and ask questions. Check our Web site (http://www.kchistoricalsoci... for a calendar of events.
