Golden Valley High School (GVHS) flipped the switch of its new stadium lighting system on a recent Friday night to shine some light on their search for a new stadium sound system.
The school’s new stadium lights were ceremoniously switched on during a series of intra-squad football scrimmages on Aug. 29. The event included dignitaries Mayor Harvey Hall, Pastor Mullings of Truth Tabernacle, GVHS first principal Willie Sandoval, Kern High School District Superintendent Dr. Don Carter, the U.S. Army, Station 41 Fire Department, a performance from GVHS band, and cheerleaders. The event raised $7,000 that will go toward further completion of the stadium including the sound system.
The fundraising group for the stadium project is called “Fans of the Stadium” and is still looking for contributions from the community to complete Bulldog Stadium. About $100,000 is needed for the sound system, to build ticket booths and fencing around the entire football field, and to place our bronze bulldog at the entrance.
GVHS honored those responsible thus far for progress on the stadium. Major contributors include SC Anderson (scoreboard), Bill Sidhu, GVHS Fine Arts Boosters, GVHS staff, the GVHS Athletic Booster Club, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Blackhawk, the Cornelius family, the Buys family and Sam Bowman. Their newest sponsors, Jostens’s and Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, made it possible for the group to sell stadium cushions at the their inaugural home football game which took place Friday, Sept.12.
The easiest and most convenient way to help GVHS put the finishing touches on their stadium is to send a check to Golden Valley High School “Fans of the Stadium,” 801 Hosking Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93307. For more information on getting involved, helping out, or to make a gift, call activity director Julie Gibson or assistant principal Vickie Spanos at 827-0800.
