Friends of the Kern County Library, Inc. Used Book Sale October 16th to 20th
Books on U.S. military history from medieval warfare through the Gulf
War will be featured at the Friends of the Kern County Library's Used
Book Sale at the Beale Memorial Library auditorium from October 16th through
20th.
The military collection was donated by Dr. Robert Howard of Tehachapi, who
became interested in military history as a teenager.
Howard, subsequently, spent thirty years combined in the Active and Reserve
U.S. Army, beginning in the 1960's. Every summer from 1978-1993, while a
professor of geography at Cal State Northridge, Howard joined the Adjunct
Faculty at the U.S. Army's command and General Staff College at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas, where he taught military history, as well as offensive
and defensive tactics. Howard retired from the U.S. Army Reserves with the
rank of Lt. Colonel.
Pre-sale for members will be October 16th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Individual
memberships for $10 and family memberships for $15.00 will be sold at the
door. Public sale hours will be Friday, October 17th, from 10:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and Monday,
October 20th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday will be HALF-PRICE DAY!
The money from our sales goes right back to the library. We funded the
summer programs for children throughout Kern County and also the programs
at the Beale Library for teens and adults. The rest of the money is put into the
Library Book Trust. In these times of budget crunches that money becomes
even more important to the Library.
