August has always signified a time of change for me. Kids start lining up for buses to take them to a new year of learning. Or parents like Susan Lemons are busy turning their own homes into schoolrooms.
The path along the Kern River becomes filled with outdoor enthusiasts and brave Bakersfield residents eager to hit the sandy riverbed and start training for one of my favorite local events: the Volkslauf.
Even if this is your first time hearing about the mud run that benefits the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots program, Nanette Bonilla’s article might motivate you to take the “Ultimate Challenge.”
This August will signify another change for me: becoming the editor of The Southwest Voice. An avid writer myself, I am excited to be a part of a publication that gives a voice to the people of Southwest Bakersfield. Dana Martin will now dedicate her editor duties to The Northwest Voice, though you’ll see us collaborate on joint projects and marketing events, too.
As your new editor, it is my goal to continue the evolution of The Southwest Voice as a leader in citizen journalism. Of course, the key words are “citizen journalism,” meaning that I can’t do it without you! So, I look forward to reading what you have to say and putting it in The Southwest Voice.
