Brian Foley, a 16-year-old Ridgeview High School junior, beat some of the best skeet shooters in the west to win the California State Skeet shooting championship in Los Angeles recently. Foley, a local skeet shooting prodigy, who earlier this year was named to the Junior Second Team All-American squad, hit 399 out of 400 targets over three days to best the field, allowing him to walk away with the high overall championship.
Foley shot a perfect 100 straight in the 12 gauge, and then did the same in the 20 gauge and the 28 gauge before dropping the lone target while shooting a 99 out of 100 in the 410 bore.
“It was work,” Foley said. “I was shooting well and felt good all day. The target that got away just dropped with the wind and I couldn’t find it. It just dove to the ground. But I’m thrilled and honored to win this thing.”
Runner up to Foley, shooting a 398 out of 400, was Ron Hurlbert, another all-American shooter who, like Foley, belongs to the Kern County Gun Club.
Earlier this year, Foley won the Black Gold Skeet Tournament, he was Junior Champ at the Desatoff Open, and he won the elite AAA division at the Kenny Barnes Open and was crowned Junior Champion. All of those tournaments were held at the Kern County Gun Club while the state championships were held at the TripleB Clays shooting facility in El Monte.
