Julia Berchtold of Garces Memorial High School was named Bakersfield’s Junior Miss, Class of 2009. Julia won $4,100 in cash scholarships and will travel to Rohnert Park, California, to participate in the California Junior Miss State Finals this August. During the State Finals, Julia will compete with representatives from the local programs for the opportunity to become California's Junior Miss 2009 and win more than $35,000 in cash scholarships. The young woman chosen as California’s Junior Miss will go to compete in the America’s Junior Miss Scholarship Program.
 
Local business sponsors include Instant Storage, George Noroian, Abate A Weed, AJ’s Tuxedo Junction, The Dance Stop, Houston Jewelers, and Valley HQ.
 
Julia Berchtold competed against sixteen other young women on April 18th, each of which were high school juniors from local high schools. Other winners include: Sally Wang of Stockdale High School (First Runner-up, Talent Award, Fitness Award and $2,200 in scholarships), Caylynn Simonson of Centennial High School (Second Runner-up and $1,000 in scholarships), Chelsea Brown of Highland High School, Karla Castro of East High School, & Lauren Emmerson of Stockdale High School all won Special Recognition Awards and a $500 scholarship. Adriana Lopez of Liberty High School won the Essay Award and a $300 scholarship.
 
Local weatherman, Kevin Charette, served as master of ceremonies for this year’s “Beach Party” themed program. Talent presentations included pianists, monologues, flute presentations, dance, and vocal performances. Other participants include Arzel Mierop of Foothill High School, Anna Fairman & Grace Stearns of Stockdale High School, Elizabeth Farr of Garces High School, Jacqueline Dickson of Highland High School, Breanna Brooke, Melissa Ellis & Michelle Thompson of Bakersfield High School, Megan Burroughs of Centennial High School and Olivia Snider of East Bakersfield High School. The 51st AJM National Finals will take place on June 26, 27 and 28, 2008, in Mobile, Alabama. Representatives from each state will travel to Mobile to compete for more than $150,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to become America's Junior Miss 2008.
