What is your addiction??
There once was a time when coffee was old hat. It is what your mother and father drank at the morning breakfast table, or after dinner.
These days, with the help of such storefronts as Starbucks, Supreme Bean and the like, coffee is as popular as soda and tea. It is not just the drink of choice for adults anymore either, you see all sorta of people ordering drinks there from all ages.
One occasion that stands out for me is when I was in Monterey on business, I went to a Starbucks… the one in the Del Monte Center, for those of you that know the area, and I saw a kid… maybe about 10 or 12 years old, and order a Cafe Mocha with an extra shot. This floored me… I was not aware that coffee drinks like this were that popular with kids. So… being the kind of guy I am… I went and asked the “Barista” about this. She told me that there are several kids that come in.
I am not so sure I am happy about young children drinking coffee. When I was a kid, I would never have considered drinking or ordering a coffee. I had tasted it once, but at the time I thought it was disgusting. Yet my father and mother could always be found with a cup of coffee and a cigarette after dinner and pretty much the same for breakfast… but I did not care for coffee at all… that is until I joined the Marine Corps. In addition to various other things, they trained me to like Coffee. I especially enjoyed the coffee at the end of the day, when the big urn had been sitting all day and that last little bit of coffee was in the bottom of the urn… you had to tilt the urn a little to get that last little bit out. Oooh Yeah!
Me? When I order my coffee at Starbucks, I ordered something called the Triple Red-eye… This is basically a very strong coffee and three shots of espresso. Let me put an amendment to that… I DID order this until just recently when my doctor politely told me to lay off the coffee… especially after a blood pressure of 140/110. So these days I am ordering decaf… and I am almost through the withdrawals.
So, again, what is your take on children being allowed to order these coffee drinks, and what do YOU order when you order coffee?

This is so timely that it's creepy! A coworker was just talking about seeing a kid with a Red Bull drink, and he said, "When I was that age, I don't recall needing caffeine -- I was just naturally hyper!" Same here! Coffee when I was young? BLECH! I thought my parents were SOOOOO old with their coffee and (yes) cigarettes. I did whatever I could NOT to appear like my parents. Today, these places are marketing to the youth-- showing kids on TV programs like The Hills or Gossip Girls drinking their Starbucks. These days, it's "in" to drink coffee. I just worry what that is going to do to their bodies when they are old like me (as I take yet another swig off my Burger King Mocha BK Joe!).
I didn't start drinking coffee until I was in my early 20's, and even then it was limited to the occasional workday, and loaded with fake creamer and saccharin. I didn't start developing the "addiction" until Gloria Jean's opened at Valley Plaza and started handing out samples of their iced cappuccinos. (I'm sure this was the root of my soon developing hypoglycemia.) Since then I've learned to enjoy my coffee sugar-free, flavoring-free, half-caff (so I can drink more!) and with non-fat milk only. My husband and I have totally become coffee snobs, always seeking out the nearest Starbucks whenever we vacation so as not to have to drink the "other stuff". To someone who drinks it daily, yes, there is a difference! Thankfully, we've learned how to brew it at home, thus saving us THOUSANDS of dollars, ha ha.Regarding the kids/coffee issue... my daughter (11) will occasionally indulge in a Frappucino, but it is always decaf. When I question other children (preteen age) about their oohing and ahhing at the mention of Starbucks, it usually turns out that what they are ordering at Starbucks actually does not contain any coffee at all. Many of the Frappucinos are just glorified milkshakes, caffeine-free. Not that all the sugar is good for them, but it sure beats those kids I see pounding down a Rockstar or Monster energy drink. I agree - totally unnecessary at their age, and just what are they going to do for energy when they reach my age?! Yikes!
I haven't been a coffee drinker consistently until about 17 or 18, and even then it was just on occasion, but more often then before. I'm 19 now, but I do notice it helps. Believe it or not, being my age I still don't have those huge burst of energy that anyone would think. In fact, this morning I was so droopy, that I had to make a stop by Starbucks to pick up one of their Caramel Macchiatos. After about a fourth the way drank, it's caffeine energy boost kicks in! Though I do believe with this post, that the younger generation (I mean younger then me) is in fact overly infatuated with the coffee scheme. I never thought a beverage such as this would become such a hit, but then again you have to give it to Starbucks. They know how to create those special ingredients that sway away from the old coffee taste, to a new, sweet better taste that all the kids do now enjoy. Plus, all their commercials and ads seem to direct toward the young generation as well.
