The Southern Sierra Council, Boy Scouts of America has honored six local leaders with Scouting’s highest honor during the Council Annual Leadership Dinner held Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Bakersfield Museum of Art.
Those receiving the Silver Beaver Award include Kathryn Burgess, William Butler, Richard Cervantes, Joe Cushnyr, Rod Hutton and David Wasserman. Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver is the highest award that a local Council presents on behalf of the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America. The Silver Beaver recipient is an individual who is honored by their fellow volunteers, not only for their Scouting involvement but for what they have done overall for the youth of their community. A volunteer committee looks at every registered adult Scout leader in the Council and reviews what each person has done to improve their community. The local Council receives a distinct number of these awards based on the number of Scout units it serves. The Silver Beaver award is presented only to volunteer adult leaders.
Kathryn Burgess has served Scouting for over 25 years in roles that include den leader, day camp director, roundtable commissioner,
William Butler has been actively engaged in the development, maintenance, repair and expansion of the Council’s summer camp,
Richard Cervantes has served Scouting for over 35 years as Assistant Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, Merit Badge Counselor and currently serves as District Chairman for the Council’s Inyo Mono District, encompassing the entire
Joe Cushnyr has taken on many leadership positions in the Scouting program including Den Leader, Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Associate Advisor and District Committee Member. He has made many improvements at
His peers have described Rod Hutton as having “an amazing spirit when it comes to Scouting” as evidenced by his active involvement as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Unit Commissioner, Venture Crew Advisor, Merit Badge Counselor and District Membership Chairman. Rod is also a registered Girl Scout Leader and teaches gun safety in local schools.
David Wasserman began his calling in Scouting as a Cubmaster and has held several other positions in the program including Scoutmaster, Committee Member, Unit Commissioner, Roundtable Commissioner and District Committee Member. Wasserman has worked with the handicapped in the community and has volunteered at local elementary schools working with children and doing fundraising activities. He also teaches safety awareness at the County of Kern Administrative Building.
The Southern Sierra Council, Boy Scouts of America is pleased to present these six recipients as its Silver Beaver Class of 2008.
