Whether they are newcomers to Bakersfield or just new to motherhood, mothers looking for a playgroup for their children and an invaluable source of fun, friendship and support for themselves can find it in the Moms Network of Kern County.
Moms Network is a very active and well-established moms group which was founded more than a decade ago in Bakersfield. It began as the local chapter of a national organization for stay-at-home mothers and later became an independent, member-led organization.
The Moms Network calendar includes at least two activities or events each week, including park days, pool days in the summer, luncheons, outings and field trips. In any given month the group may tour a fire station, visit an apple farm, go to the zoo, or attend story time at a local bookstore.
The group also hosts a monthly Moms and/or Couples Night Out, Moms Lunch Out and Book Club. In addition, two events for the entire family are held each year, the Spring Fling and the Fall Festival.
Moms Network also gives its members who wish to participate, an opportunity to perform community service. Each year the group chooses a charitable project that benefits children in our area.
For the last three years, the group has adopted Buttowillow School in the nearby farming community of Buttonwillow. The group has, among other things, provided the needy students there with books, playground toys and backpacks. Moms Network also traditionally adopts a family or families for the holidays and provides them with gifts and food.
Moms Network is large enough, yet small enough - the group usually has about 50 to 60 members -- that the moms can really get to know one another and are bound to find others that they click with, members say. And new members are always welcome!
