This November the Kern Autism Network (KAN) collaborated with Kern Regional Center to distribute turkeys to families affected by autism spectrum disorders to insure they enjoyed a holiday dinner for Thanksgiving.

KAN purchased 40 turkeys from Hammons Meat Sales and coordinated with Kern Regional Center to distribute food gifts to selected families in need before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke).  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 150 children is affected by autism.

The Kern Autism Network provides support, awareness, information and education to families, professionals and the public throughout Kern County.  New members are always welcome.  For more information, visit our website at www.kernautism.org.
