Having years of experience, I know that being in a band is a difficult task. First, a band has to have some shred of talent. Once that major bridge is crossed, however, there are countless other aspects that require constant attention: the vision of the band, the commitment level and availability of the members, the style of music to produce and most importantly the message to deliver through the music.
The latter of these categories is one of the most crucial because a band's message can range from childish to romantic, common thought to controversial and everything in between. Interestingly, one of the most controversial messages to deliver through music is the message of Jesus Christ. The label of "Christian" in the music industry is often the equivalent of social suicide. Though the general American population has deemed it acceptable to promote bands which glorify behaviors such as adultery, revenge and selfishness, they turn their backs on equally talented musicians who sing about the grace, hope and love all people can find in Jesus Christ alone.
I bring up this issue because there is a new venue in town for bands who are bold enough to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ. Calvary Chapel Westbrook,
Calvary Chapel Westbrook has hosted some of Christian music's well-known artists including Sarah Kelly, Kendall Payne, Phil Wickham, and Jimmy Needham. In addition, they have opened their doors to some very talented up-and-coming artists from all over the nation. All concerts at The Journey are free to the public as a way to reach out with great music and the truth of Jesus Christ. If you would like more information about future concerts and teachings at The Journey or if you are in a Christian band and want information on sharing your music at The Journey, please visit www.thejourneyccw.com and look at the fall schedule.
