Some people go to the fair for the great food, some go to the fair for the awesome entertainment, some go to see the exhibits of Kern County, but some go to the fair to build a home for a needy family.

Habitat for Humanity can be found every Saturday building a home somewhere in Kern County. For the last 10 days hundreds of volunteers ages 17 to 77 have been building the 37th habitat home for the Cruz family of Arvin.

Carloads of volunteers came to the fair to help professional electricians and carpenters who also volunteer their time. It’s an atmosphere of happy learning. The volunteers are learning and the professionals are happy to have some help. The soon to be homeowners are there putting in their required working hours called “sweat equity.”

Next year when you are at the fair, look for the habitat for humanity house, grab a hammer and help build a home for a deserving family.
