After receiving dozens of suggestions from visitors who participated in the Name the Bear Contest, a panel of
CALM judges decided that the zoo’s newest resident, a 1-year-old black bear, will be named “Louie.” Since Louie was delivered from San Luis Obispo County to CALM by the California Department of Fish and Game on June 21, the judges felt the name was a good tie-in to his roots and would be friendly and easy-to-remember for visitors.
Six people who nominated the name Louie for the contest will be recipients of CALM memberships. They are Katie Chaney, Kristen Stewart, Ginger LeBlanc, Zachary Rickett, Nancy Allen and David DeMarco.
When brought to CALM, Louie weighed approximately 150 pounds. He had to be relocated because California Fish and Game Department determined he had become a danger to himself and fishermen in the area whose huts he had wandered into looking for leftover fish. CALM animal keepers say he has a gentle disposition and appears to be very intelligent, which visitors have already discovered.
Louie replaces Dart, a female black bear that was a longtime resident at CALM until paralysis earlier this year resulted in her being euthanized. He joins another male black bear, Cinnamon, in the bear habitat. Cinnamon has been at CALM since March 13, 2003 as a replacement for deceased male, black bear Digger, who CALM staffers say Louie resembles in many ways.
