Bakersfield Tiger Cub Scouts of Den 5, Pack 433 explored the Kern River Parkway with their families, Den Leaders Glen and Kenie Imke, and co-chair of the Kern Audubon Society Dr. Ted Murphy. Dr. Murphy helped the Cub Scouts identify cottonwood, willow, sycamore and numerous other trees and shrubs that are part of the Kern River habitat. The group also saw many woodpeckers, swallows and water fowl.
According to Murphy, “The boys were very interested and soon were able to recognize some of the birds and plants, and even the songs of birds. They did very well for 6-year-olds.”
The Cub Scouts used binoculars to spot birds in the tops of trees and on grassy lawns.
After the field trip the Cub Scouts of Den 5 were promoted to Wolfpack.
