Although Summer is winding down and the kids are back to school, there is still plenty of time to enjoy your outdoor space. This is one of the many benefits of living in California.

Whether large or small, extravagant or simple, we love our outdoor spaces! Having been an apartment dweller for many years, a small outdoor patio has become my favorite. When it comes to designing or decorating them, the possibilities are endless. Here are a few suggestions for dressing up a small patio.

  • Start with an area rug. There are many on the market these days, which are specially designed for outdoor use. Or if your budget is tight, shop yard sales and thrift stores. You will be surprised at how much warmth a rug can bring to your space.
  • Next, add a table. You can use a round one or square. It doesn't have to be fancy, just make sure it's the right scale for your space. Now dress that table up just like you would indoors, with a bright colored table cloth. Or layer fabrics, table runners, or place-mats for a free spirited artistic look. Put a candle stick, potted plant, or vase of fresh cut flowers in the middle, and you have the beginnings of an inviting place to have your morning coffee.
  • Add a couple of comfortable chairs. These too can be dressed up, using cushions and pillows. If your chairs aren't pretty, tie a sash around the back. You can even paint them with bright colored spray paint to coordinate with the fabrics on the table.
  • Now add more color to your space with flowers. Use various size pots. Or use nontraditional containers like old teapots or painted metal buckets. You would be amazed at what you can find around the house. Just make sure they have adequate drainage. Group your flower pots in groups of three or five. Give some of them height for added interest. You can turn a pot upside down and put another on top to achieve this. Pay attention to the light and watering needs of the flowers you choose, and you will have lots of enjoyment from them.
  • If you have a covered patio, don't forget to dress up the space above. String up lights, or hang wind chimes. You can even add an old chandelier with candles above the table. Hanging baskets of flowers will add a punch of color, but be careful when you water, or your table cloth will be a mess.

Now that your patio is beautiful and inviting, spend time there. Have a refreshing drink, read a book, or watch the kids play. There is something about being outdoors that helps you relax, regenerate, and restore. Enjoy your outdoor space, you deserve it!
