Jell-O, that jiggly gelatin substance that graces most every summer barbecue or family reunion, has been a favorite dessert for many decades. With a large variety of colors and flavors, Jell-O is something that can be enjoyed by children and adults everywhere. But sometimes Jell-O just isn't what I am after. Sometimes I want something a little cooler to refresh my mouth in the hot summer sun. That "something else" is Gelato.

Gelato is an Italian dessert in origin. It has a texture similar to ice cream, but is smoother and more dense. The flavors are much more defined than ice cream flavors... and it's healthier too! It sounds like Gelato is too good to be true, but I promise I did not make this up!

So what's the point? We're in Bakersfield, not Italy! I'm not flying ten thousand miles around the world for dessert! Well, if you tasted the chocolate Gelato, you might reconsider. Luckily, you don't have to plan a week-long vacation around your next dessert. Instead, you might want to swing by Solomon's Porch located at 6501 Schirra Court, 93313. With the brand new Gelato bar in house, "The Porch" has made quite a few new friends in the last 2 weeks. The Gelato bar features 20 different flavors ranging from Raspberry to Tiramisu to Pistachio. Of course all the classic flavors are represented too: Chocolate, Vanilla, Cookies & Cream, Mint & Chip, and Strawberry just to name a few.

Luckily for me I am an employee at Calvary Chapel Westbrook, the church that manages and operates Solomon's Porch, so I have this tasty treat at my fingertips day and night. Though it may not be quite as convenient for you to taste pure joy, it's well worth the drive to have a free sample and then buy a cup! For $2.75, you'll have plenty to satisfy your sweet tooth and money left to enjoy another cup tomorrow! So do yourself a favor and visit the sweetest place in town. Hope to see you there. I'll be the one hovering around the case.
