The first 80 Kern County students who apply to the Kern Projection Student Filmmakers Conference will have the opportunity to attend workshops, a college recruitment forum and hear from speakers with advice for aspiring youth filmmakers at the conference on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Distinguished speakers will include film festival finalists, academics and local community filmmakers. Among the many conference workshops will be a mini-screenwriting competition in which students write a scene based on a short prompt. After each script is evaluated, students will perform select scenes, and one screenplay will be selected as the winner.
The event is being held in conjunction with the first Kern Projections Film Festival Oct. 10 through 14. The purpose of the student filmmakers conference is to use cinema for early prevention for at-risk students in the community.
The 80 openings will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are required to provide a recommendation from a teacher endorsing their attendance. The total cost of the daylong event including lunch is $40. Tuition can be waived though the conference scholarship application due Sep. 15.
