Nothing else can change the look of a room like color. And for some, there is no other task more daunting than choosing the perfect color.

After all, there are so many choices! How can we possibly choose just the right one?

RELAX. Choosing the right colors can be easy and fun. For starters, you don’t have to choose just one.

If your plans are to redo the entire space, then start with the paint color for your walls. Choose something from the color family you are most drawn to, but keep in mind that neutrals are still the best bet for common living spaces like the living room.

If your favorite color is red, for instance, you can use red as an accent color on one wall, or sprinkle it around the room in the form of accessories, such as pillows, rugs, or pottery.

According to HGTV.com, you can achieve a cohesive look by following the 60.30.10 rule. That is, choosing a color that covers 60% of the space, such as the walls, and a secondary color that covers 30%, like the soft furniture. Use a strong color for the last 10%, in the form of accessories. This last color may very well have the most impact in the room. It gives the space it’s “dazzle,” much like jewelry.

Perhaps you already have furniture you absolutely love, but still, your white walls are screaming for help. Choose one of the neutral colors that already exist in the room. For example, the background color in a pattern on the sofa or chair. If you have an area rug, you may use the colors found there for inspiration. If you are still not sure, buy samples or quart sizes, and put them on the wall in various locations around the room. Let the paint dry and live with the color for a couple of days before painting the entire room.

Make your home uniquely yours, with color. Enjoy the experience, and remember that color is not only expressive, but it can be calming or stimulating. It can help you relax, and it can lift your spirits.
