Have you ever planned to do something totally out of the ordinary, saw it through, then looked back soon afterward and wondered, “Wow! What just happened?”
Lots of Christian believers have had this experience by going on a short-term mission trip.
This summer, small teams of common people — like stay-at-home moms, doctors, retired teachers, college students, widows, and children, all with passion for their faith — will put their everyday lives on hold for a few weeks to embark on such adventures. The Oaks Community Church, 10200 Campus Park Drive, has partnered with several foreign countries to further the gospel in a variety of ways. Primarily, these teams will help operate a medical clinic in Nigeria, teach English to school children in Thailand, and minister to missionary families in Spain. Surely upon their return, many will contemplate the above question, and may never fully grasp the impact they had by temporarily sacrificing of themselves to serve others in the name of Jesus.
To help facilitate these outreach journeys, the church is hosting a huge yard sale on Saturday, June 23, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vacancy of their temporary worship center on the church property will allow shoppers to find treasures at bargain prices in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment. Donations from the community are welcome and greatly appreciated.
The family-style event “Classic Freedom” will follow shortly afterward with an old-fashioned potluck gathering that will be open to the community to commemorate Independence Day on July 4. The event will be held at the church to slow down from the busyness of summer and enjoy the afternoon connecting with friends and getting to know people from neighboring communities.
Kids will be the focus of one last summer blast. They will experience a part of history as they see, hear, touch, and even taste what it was like to live in Bible times at our Vacation Bible School, Galilee by-the-Sea. Children ages 4 through sixth grade are invited to travel back into the past without setting foot outside the community by exploring the marketplace, visiting the synagogue, playing games, and enjoying music as God’s word comes alive. Daily activities will be free, and will take place July 23 through 27 from 9 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. for all registered participants.
Join us on Sunday mornings for worship services and Sunday School at 9 a.m. or 10:45 a.m.
