You’ve probably heard all the new buzzwords like redesign, remix, freestyle, redux, and no-cost decorating. You’ve seen these words and phrases on HGTV, car windows, yard signs, the Internet, and newspapers.
Yes, redesign is all the rage. But what is it? Interior redesign is a process performed by professional re-designers, which involves proper placement of furniture, accessories, rugs, lighting, and artwork.
But the really wonderful thing about redesign is that it is all done with the furniture and accessories that you already own. You know, all those beautiful items that you have been collecting for years. Things that you just can’t part with, but you’re not sure how to fit them in with your personal style, either. Or maybe you do know what to do –– put them on a table, right?
“So why does my space look so cluttered?” you ask? I think I have the answer.
Redesign is all about placement. In fact, even placing your furniture and accessories an inch in one direction or the other can make all the difference in the way a room flows, and how you feel when you walk into the space. To assure that your accessories enhance your space, rather than cluttering it, place like items in groups of three, five or seven. Instead of spreading them out all over the room, put them close to each other, almost touching. This is called a vignette. I would also recommend that you choose items that are the right scale for your room and your furniture. If you have a lot of small items, use books or blocks to lift some of the small items up. This will give the appearance of something tall on your table. Tall is good. It adds interest and lifts your eye up. So go ahead, play around with it in your own room. It may take a little practice, but keep moving the items around on your table until the arrangement pleases you. Before you know it, you’ll be rearranging accessories in every room of your house.
