Southwest students crunch numbers at county competition

Approximately 950 students from 35 schools competed at the 37th annual Kern County Middle School Mathematics Field Day held at Ridgeview High School on May 5. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, as well as students in an algebra class for which they will receive high school credit, competed in a series of written events testing math skills by grade level on an individual basis and in teams of two, three, four and five.
The competition was a fun day of problem solving games and competitions. Some have playful names such as leap frog and mad hatter. Still others offer the flavor of athletic competition with names such as power relay, circuit training, individual medley and triathlon games.
“Questions are written to the California Content Standards,” said Anne Santer, event coordinator. “So, students can prepare for Mathematics Field Day while preparing for the California Standards test at the same time. And the competition is fun for everyone.”

Individual medley
Top students from each school
• Actis Junior High School: Justin Yeh, seventh grade; and Jonathon Holguin, eighth grade.
• Lakeside Elementary School: Rudy Castanda, sixth grade; Becca Goss, seventh grade; and Samantha Schlussel, eighth grade.
• Loudon Elementary School: Tanner Compton, sixth grade.
• Stine Elementary School: Abby Mejia, sixth grade.
• Stockdale Elementary School: David Kim, sixth grade.
• Stonecreek Junior High School: Harpunit Sindhar, seventh grade; and Cody Fackler, eighth grade.
• Thompson Junior High School: Cristobal Trujillo and Edward Vohnout, seventh grade; and Nestor Rios and Chantz Williams, eighth grade.
• Warren Junior High School: Henry Maala, sixth grade; Jotthe Kannappan, seventh grade; and Alicia Mathur, eighth grade.
Sixth grade power relays
• Second place: Stephanie Larson, Patrick Ho, Ivan Robles, Ashely Melenithan and Mitzi Buenrostro of Warren Junior High.
• Third place: Abby Baker, Thomas Price, Carlyn Gonzales, Caitlin Williams and Courtney Sangis of Stockdale Elementary.
Eighth grade power relays
• Second place: Sheila Lewis, Harpreet Kaur, Steven Whyte, Stephen Mongen and Skylar Payne of Actis Junior High.
Sixth grade leap frog
• Second place: Henry Maala and Michael Pimentel of Warren Junior High.
• Fourth place: Max Carter and David Kim of Stockdale Elementary.
Seventh grade leap frog
• First place: Enoch Chang and Howard Wang of Actis Junior High.
Eighth grade leap frog
• Third place: Jacob Mansour and John Abou–Ghazale of Actis Junior High.
Seventh and eighth grade circuit training
• Third place: Harpunit Sindnar and Inderviv Gill of Stonecreek Junior High.
• Fourth place: Lewis Rogers and Sal Cruz of Actis Junior High.
Seventh grade mad hatter
• Second place: Jessie Salas and Justin Yeh of Actis Junior High.
Sixth grade Sudoku
• Fourth place: Manraj Kaur of Loudon Elementary.
Eighth grade Sudoku
• Third place: Brittney Cotner of Lakeside Elementary.

• Third place: Harpunit Sindhar, Zeke Kennedy, Daniel Ibarra, Jasdeep Singh of Stonecreek Junior High.

The competition was sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Westchester Kiwanis Club, Bakersfield Math Council, California Math Council, Kern County Science Foundation American Petroleum Institute-San Joaquin Valley Chapter and Ridgeview High School.
