Thirty fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders wrote convincing essays based on the topic “How Does Advertising Affect Our Decisions” to earn a spot in the annual Bank of America Essay and Speech Contest finals to be held on May 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at University Square, 2000 K St.
Each speaker must deliver a three- to five-minute speech. The top three most persuasive presentations, at each grade level, in the opinion of the judges, will be declared winners.
First- through third-place awards will be presented at the conclusion of judging. Winners in each grade category will deliver an encore performance during the awards ceremony.
The annual competition, sponsored by Bank of America’s South Sierra Valley Market and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, or KCSOS, gives students a chance to practice and perfect their language arts skills.
Each region of the county was limited to nominating just one student essay for each grade. A panel from the KCSOS Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability Department judged the essays, picking the top writers in each grade to participate in the speech contest.
Finalists in grades four to six will receive trophies and savings bonds from Bank of America in the amount of $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place.
