Using solar ovens in a natural disaster and measuring the flammability of plants grown on the desert floor are just two of the subjects under scrutiny by dozens of students who entered projects in the 20th annual Kern County Regional Science Fair held March 21 at the Rabobank Convention Center.
Senior and middle school division students placing first and second in each category earned the right to compete in the 56th annual California Science Fair to be held on May 21 and 22 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Third-place finishers are top alternates.
Approximately 600 students in grades four to 12 from 140 schools competed in many categories ranging from aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to thermochemistry.
Entries were judged on scientific thought and engineering goals, creativity, organization, completeness, clarity, effort, and motivation. Students had to explain their displays, log books, and hypotheses to a panel of judges.
The science fair is administered by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools with primary sponsorship provided by Aera Energy LLC.   Additional sponsorship and support is offered by Chevron North America Exploration and Production, Occidental of Elk Hills, and Kern County Science Foundation.
