The deep rumble of souped-up engines mixed with a colorful pageantry of custom paint jobs and shining chrome usually turns more than a few heads. Add to the spectacle bounce houses, raffles, food, and serenading oldies and you have the makings of a good old-fashioned car show.
On Jan. 14, The Oaks Community Church invited the community out to enjoy a classic car expo where local owners proudly unveiled their pampered vehicles from years past and put them on display for all to see. Often with no formal training, many of these car buffs have transformed once tired and tattered automobiles into amazing masterpieces. Even the most novice of onlookers could appreciate the hard work and investment that these owners have put into their cars.
Event planner and assistant pastor Mike Espejo noted that some attendees and participants were surprised that the church was hosting a car show. Because of its success to connect with the community, he says that the church will likely develop new forums for future outreach, such as the possibility of motorcycle or off-roading vehicle shows, too.
Similar to other such community-minded events over the years, The Oaks continues to pour a lot of effort into connecting with the general public. Being planted in the Southwest, a radius of a few miles from the church campus envelopes many neighbors from a variety of backgrounds. Hosting family events each year helps people establish connections with people they may not have met otherwise.
In conjunction with the classic car show theme, the church has spent much of the new year learning about life transformation. The automobiles displayed a variety of stages of metamorphosis and each one had a unique history. The same can be said for people. Many seek renewal and restoration in areas of their life. Senior pastor Gary Barber will share over the next several months from the New Testament Book of Acts. It addresses many aspects of this life journey for people of faith.  As the book gives the history of the early church, it parallels the establishment and nurture of a “Classic Christian” life.
On Friday, March 23, we’ll follow up on the classic car show theme with a Classic Cruise Night.  We’ll meet at 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Weill Institute on the corner of 21st and L streets (across from Wells Fargo Bank), and at 6:30 p.m. we will cruise Chester, F and H streets with classic cars or any type of vehicle. Then at 7:45 p.m. we’ll all meet at The Oaks Community Church, 10200 Campus Park Drive, for free popcorn, ice cream, raffle prizes, and a fun family car movie (rated G).
