Approximately 270 students in grades four to 12 from dozens of Kern County schools are scheduled to compete in the 24th annual Kern County History Day competition from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on March 10 at Ridgeview High School, 8501 Stine Road. Performances are open to the public all day. Exhibits, posters and historical papers will be open for public viewing in the gym at 2:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held in the gym at 3:30 p.m.
History Day encourages students to explore a historical subject related to a yearly theme. This year’s theme is “Triumph and Tragedy in History.” For months, students have conducted research and prepared entries. Through this process, they learn to be historical detectives and sharpen their skills as writers, artists, and performers. With guidance from teachers, encouragement from parents and support from the community, students produce unique and exciting accounts of important people and events.
Each student entry involves the presentation of historical research in categories which include individual and group exhibits; individual and group documentaries; individual and group performances; historical papers; and posters (for fourth and fifth grades only).
Winners in each category are eligible to participate in the state competition to be held April 26 through 29 in Long Beach. The national competition will be June 10 through 14 at the University of Maryland.
The Kern County Superintendent of Schools sponsors the county event with logistical support from Ridgeview High School. For more information, call Christine Goedhart-Humphrey at 636-4330.
