Stockdale High School was the big winner at the 15th annual Kern County Regional Science Bowl held on the CSUB campus on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Stockdale Blue winning team included Siri Grandhe, David Kimber, Justin Koh, Guy Rodgers, and Joy Wang. The team now advances to the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, which will be held in Washington, D.C., April 26 through 30. Stockdale’s coach was Stephan Kiouses.
The Stockdale Red team came in second, and the East Bakersfield High School Blue team finished third.
Other competitors at this year’s Science Bowl were Foothill, Farmersville, Golden Valley, Mojave, North, Taft Union, Tehachapi, Highland, Liberty and West high schools.
Thomas Meyer, computer science professor and Science Bowl coordinator, said 27 teams competed in a fast-paced, question-answer format that covered such subjects as physics, biology, chemistry, math, earth science, computer science, and astronomy.
Meyer said the teams were divided into four groups of eight. Teams competed in a round-robin tourney in Dorothy Donahoe Hall, with each team having seven matches.
Science Bowl matches consist of two 10-minute halves. Only four of the five team members may compete at one time, but teams may substitute during match halftime.
The top two teams from each group advanced to the finals in the afternoon, where they competed in a double-elimination round.
Each match had four officials: a moderator, who read the questions, a rules judge, a timekeeper, and a scorekeeper.  A group of scientific judges ruled on any conflicts.
The winning team from Stockdale will compete against the winners of 60 other regional science bowls during the national competition.
