The Police gave their reunion performance at the Grammy’s. Their rendition of “Roxanne” made me recall a fall night during my freshman year at U.C. Davis (way back in 1978) after a night at the library when I strolled by the U.C. Davis Coffee House (a cup of Joe in your Boy Scout cup cost a mere 10 cents). There was a station wagon parked outside which I later learned the Police used for travel on their first tour. They sang “Roxanne” and the harmonies were a little off, but it was really exciting to be 20 feet from the band. The Police really became a phenomenon during my first year of college. They later sold out the 4,500-seat Freeborn Hall. I sound old saying this, but the last great era in music was the 1980s.
Later in my college career at U.C. Davis, I saw Jefferson Starship, Sammy Hagar, and Billy Joel. Those were the days of record stores and real albums, an experience you only get at World Records on Stockdale Highway.
I am trying to teach my children about The Beatles. So far, they have picked up as much about the Beatles as you can when you are 6 and 7. At least they know the name of the Beatles; which ones are alive; which ones are dead; and who is singing lead vocals (basically a 50-50 chance of getting it right unless Ringo is singing “Octopus’s Garden” or George is singing “Something.”
I plan to see the Police on tour in Las Vegas. Is it too much of a stretch to imagine watching them at our very own Rabobank Arena.
