When I heard about this contest, I was immediately faced with a dilemma. So many people have influenced my life over the years: my mom, my dad, my big brother, my best friend Jessica, and my grandparents.
But one person, Janae Jacobs, has inspired and helped me through one of the toughest years of my life. In the last six months my Papa passed away, my cousin Elaine was very ill, and my cousin Wylie also passed away at the age of 22.
I met Janae two years ago at our church youth night. She was one of the first people to say, "Hello," and greet Jessica and me. Since then, Janae always has time for me. She seems to know if people need a hug, a friendly word, or just a smile.
Janae is my Sunday school teacher and one of the best teachers I've been blessed to have. She makes her lessons exciting and fun. I admire her for her close walk with the Lord.
Janae says that when she is having a bad day she thinks to herself, "Did I do this to myself or did God want this for me?"
She knows that God will get her through anything.
Every time I see Janae, she always has a smile on her face and something kind to say. Her inspiration comes from her mom, who helped her through the most difficult years of her life. God was also with her, as she often read Colossians 3 to help her through the day.
Janae believes God gave her a strong personality and fearlessness to help reach out to other people. She inspires me because she is comfortable in her own skin and doesn't try to be someone she isn't just to get people to like her.
Janae also says, "Always try to do your best and don't be afraid to fail."
I feel that God blessed me with Janae during a time in my life when I needed someone who has been through what I'm going through. Janae often says that life is what you make it and that you are your own worst enemy. I think it's good to have someone who is around the same age to relate to and who understands my trials.
Janae is a wonderful young lady. She is attending college full time, works part-time, interns part-time, and still has time for her church, family and friends. She has her priorities where they should be. She inspires me to try harder, keep God No. 1 in my life, to be friendly to everyone I meet, and to be positive about my life.
Janae is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. I'm very proud to have her in my life.
