Hear ye! Hear ye! Hear ye!
The second annual Van Horn Elementary School Parent Club Classic Fun Car and Bike Show will be held on Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wayne Van Horn Elementary School, 5501 Kleinpell Ave., located directly behind Stockdale Village and the Vons store on Stockdale Highway and California Avenue.
This California Distinguished School has been meeting the needs of kids in kindergarten through sixth grade since 1969.
March 17 promises to be an exciting day with lots of things to do for everyone — young and old, male and female. There will be cars on display from every era, including Grandfather Cars (pre 1930), Gangster Cars (must have running boards), Thoroughly Modern Millies (modern iron to 2007), stock cars, restored cars, street rods, modified, trucks, and maybe even a lowrider or race car thrown in.
In addition, there may be D.A.R.E. cars, CHP cars, Bakersfield Police Department cars, fire engines, ambulances, military vehicles, and much more.
This year we have added motorcycles to the mix and expect every kind of road hog there is to attend. As if that wasn’t enough, we have decided to make our event even bigger! There will be a kids’ show that will feature bicycles, tricycles, wagons, pedal cars, scooters, and other kinds of transportation used by kids.
What else is going on? We have added a craft fair to our car show this year. There will be handmade jewelry, wood crafts, fabric crafts, crochet items, and even a student art auction. Bid on any student’s artwork and the highest bidder takes it home.
There will be a prize drawing for gift certificates, trips, and everything in between. We will have fun booths of bowling, a “cookie walk,” basketball, a jump house or two, food (nachos, Polish dogs, baked potatoes, popcorn), a book fair, and so much more.
Cars and bikes for the guys, shopping for the ladies, and fun stuff for the kids. It’s going to be a great time for the whole family.
What is the purpose of this event? It costs money to send kids on field trips and to provide needed supplies and materials to educate today’s kids. Money raised will send sixth-grade students to Camp KEEP; send fourth-grade students on a mission field trip; provide various field trips for other grades; stock supplies for teachers to use in their classrooms; acquire special equipment that the school district cannot provide; fund awards to recognize student achievement and accomplishments; and much more. That’s what the Van Horn Elementary School Parent Club is all about. We need your help and support.
While our event is all about raising funds for our kids, and we know we receive a lot of support and help from our community, we feel we should give back to the community when we can. For that reason we are doing two things in conjunction with the car show.
First, there will be a canned food drive to gather food for needy people in our area. Bring a canned food item if possible.
Second, there will be a 50/50 drawing where you can buy a ticket that will be placed in a basket. Toward the end of the event, one ticket will be drawn from the basket. If it is your ticket, you will receive 50 percent of the funds brought in from the 50/50 drawing sales. The other 50 percent will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Kern County. This is our way of giving back to the community and of thanking the public for all of their support.
The whole community is invited. Tickets for drawings, food, and fun activities will be available for purchase on the day of the event. Admission is free and a good time is guaranteed! Thanks for supporting our school.
