The Park at River Walk is now set up for wireless Internet access free to all park visitors for the first six months.
After that, Bright House Road Runner Internet customers can continue to use the service for free, but others will have to pay $1.95 per hour, or $6.95 per day.

HolidayLights at CALM will be featured nationally on the Home and Garden Television (HGTV) network in a program called “Over The Top Christmas” on Dec. 17 at 9 p.m.
Cable television viewers can see the program on Bright House Networks Channel 58 and on Suddenlink Communications Channel 62.
Using a local production crew, Nancy Glass Productions Producer Bart Makatche spent an entire day at CALM on Nov. 10 to capture volunteer crews readying displays containing more than 2 million lights for HolidayLights, which opened Nov. 24. Makatche also focused on the injured and abandoned animals at CALM, tying the enjoyment of the event to the needed dollars it raises.
Viewers will see the spectacle of the fourth annual light show as videotaped by Makatche’s crew, as well as scenes shot and provided by Kern County Superintendent of Schools’ television production manager John Lenko.
Makatche said “Over the Top Christmas” will visit several locations across America, including CALM, concentrating on ornamental lighting for the season. CALM is unique in that HolidayLights will be the only outdoor display in the show that is not connected to a residential setting.
HolidayLights at CALM, located between Hart Park and Lake Ming on Alfred Harrell Highway, runs through Dec. 30 (except Dec. 24 and 25), nightly from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through Vallitix, 322-5200, or at the gate.  Admission prices are $5 for children ages 3 to 17, $7 for seniors over 60 and $10 for adults. Admission includes free Ferris wheel and Candy Cane Express train rides. Parking is also free. For more information, visit: wwwcalmzoo.org

A huge new shopping center is planned for the Southwest. The $90 million shopping center would include 600,000 square feet of retail space spread over 57 acres at the southwest corner of Gosford Road and Panama Lane.
The center would rank among the largest shopping centers in Bakersfield, smaller than the 1 million-square-foot Northwest Promenade but larger than Castle & Cooke’s 500,000 square-foot Shops at River Walk and the 300,000 square-foot Marketplace.
The project is still in its earliest stages. The two companies that partnered to purchase the property for $15 million are Valencia-based builder Intertex Companies Inc. and A&B Properties, the real estate subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, a Honolulu-based developer, shipper and food producer.
The two companies have worked together on other projects, and are in the process of building three Santa Clarita shopping centers measuring between 62,000 and 122,000 square feet.
Intertex and A&B Properties expect construction to begin in early 2008 and will take a year to complete.
Orange-based Architects Orange has been hired to serve as the Bakersfield project’s architectural firm. A preliminary site design plan done a year ago by a former owner will be redone.  A local engineering firm will be selected for the project in the next two weeks.

Sporting goods store Sport Chalet is set to move into the empty Ralphs building at the shopping center on California Avenue and Stockdale Highway. A Circle K convenience store and gas station will open in part of the space formerly occupied by Krispy Kreme.
Sport Chalet signed a lease for the space in October and will take over approximately 42,000 square feet of the 58,000-square-foot grocery store building. The remaining space will be filled by a tenant still to be determined.
Sport Chalet is expected to open in late spring or early summer of 2007. It will be Sport Chalet’s first Bakersfield location.
Sport Chalet, based in La Cañada, has 43 locations in California, Arizona and Nevada, including stores in Palmdale, Valencia and Visalia.
The Sport Chalet location in Bakersfield will feature a scuba-diving instruction pool and training facility.
Circle K recently signed a lease to occupy part of the former Krispy Kreme building and plans to add a gas canopy to the property. Negotiations are ongoing for the remainder of the former Krispy Kreme property.
Circle K is expected to open in early 2007. The building has been vacant since Krispy Kreme closed in November 2005. The Ralphs closed in March 2005.
At least three other tenants, including a possible drugstore, are also being considered for the intersection at Stockdale and California.

The Sports Authority sporting goods retailer will move into the Ming Avenue building that currently houses Copeland’s Sports, which has filed for bankruptcy protection. Sports Authority will also take over 12 other Copeland’s Sports locations that are closing.
The Bakersfield Copeland’s location will reopen as a Sports Authority in the spring of 2007.
Englewood, Colo.-based Sports Authority says it is the nation’s largest sporting goods retailer, operating 408 stores in 45 states.

Phoenix Custom Homes is breaking ground for a $500,000 house to be raffled off to benefit of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in its Mountain Meadows subdivision.
In late March, a limited number of chances to win the St. Jude Dream Home and other prizes will go on sale for $100 each. The winning names will be drawn live on KERO Channel 23 and Azteca America on July 28.
“This is a project the whole community can get involved with and excited about,” said Lisa Roberson of Phoenix Custom Homes. “We’re going to make a dream come true for the lucky person who wins this house. Plus, we’ll help St. Jude give more Bakersfield-area children with cancer the chance to grow up.”
Founded by Danny Thomas in 1962, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has treated more than 21,000 young cancer patients at no cost to their families.
To donate products or services, contact Lisa Roberson at 214-2028.
