“NDN NRS”
That was my friend Jeanne Davies’ personalized license plate, “Indian Nurse.” She was very proud of her job and the people she cared for at the American Indian Council of Bakersfield.
I met her at the council in 1992. The staff called her “Sarge” because of her brisk, no-nonsense manner. I loved her as a mom, friend, confidante and adviser.
Jeanne Ellen Davies died Monday, Oct. 9. She had been ill the last few years,  and in the last couple of months of her life, seemed to go downhill.
I was expecting the call, yet when I heard her sister’s voice on the answering machine, I waited over an hour before calling back, trying to keep Jeanne alive just a few moments longer.
In 1993, when cancer was discovered in my ovaries, Jeanne was there  changing my bandages, removing staples, and discussing treatments. She showed me scars from her cancer, giving me hope that I would beat mine. I did.
For the next few years, Jeanne lived through all my relationships. She kept silent through some, shared her displeasure with others, and seemed to know before I did that my husband Tim was the right man for me.
When she lived in Cayucos, I traveled the over two-hour drive to see her twice a month for years. We would sit up late at night, eating junk food and laughing through silly movies and videos.
When, for health reasons, Jeanne eventually moved in with her daughter Lisa’s family, I picked her up for a road trip.  We drove up and down the coast for what we called “meals and giggles.” There were no taboo subjects for us — we shared everything with each other.
A few years back,  Lisa and her family relocated to Hawaii, and took Jeanne with them. I knew I would never get to see her again. We exchanged phone calls, letters, gifts and e-mails. When Jeanne had to go into nursing care, I sent her pictures and more letters. I kept in touch with Lisa. She and I had grown close over the years. When I asked after “Mom,” Lisa knew that I felt Jeanne was my mom, too.
I will miss her always.
Jeanne’s birthday was Oct. 16. Happy birthday my friend, and God bless you.
The holidays are often a time when were are reminded of those who are no longer with us to celebrate. Do you have a friend or relative who has passed away who you would like to honor with a few paragraphs? Submit your memories and a photo online at: www.swvoice.com or e-mail to: lhelper@swvoice.com
