Thank you so much for your beautiful coverage of National  Adoption Day and the Chaffee family’s story. You did a fantastic job presenting the needs, challenges, and joys of foster care adoption.
I wanted to correct one statement in the article that the Chaffees received their foster care license after completing eight months of classes. Once someone submits an application for a license, they are required to complete 27 hours of pre-service training. Those classes can be completed within just three weeks.
Also, your article states that foster care adoptions are closed adoptions.  Although that can be the case, the Department of Human Services encourages adopting families to help children maintain contact with biological relatives. That feeling of connectedness with one’s past, one’s sense of history, can be very important to a person’s development, especially as they age into adolescence and beyond. We do, however, allow the adopting family to decide whether they want their child to continue contact with birth families.
Again, thank you so much for a story well told.
