"AVID" stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID has many expectations and goals, such as understanding the importance of going to college, being a better student, and organizational skills. AVID means being able to be all that you can be and believing in yourself that you can be a driven student with a great future ahead.
AVID has been offered at O.J. Actis for six years, and we are hoping it will continue for years to come.
In addition to learning the advantages of attending college, students also do projects like Power Point, where we research about a college we want to go to, college awareness activities like college weeks, and fun days on Friday at the end of each month, binder checks, and tutorials that are some of our daily classwork.
The last Wednesday of the month we make a video showing what we've learned that month.
We are in charge of the candy grams in February, which are always fun. We also go on field trips. Last year we went to Cal Poly and this year we will hopefully go to UCLA.
We have guest speakers, and most importantly all students participate in school service.
Also, we have Family Night where our families come and meet each other and learn what AVID is about.
Last year we repainted and decorated the Actis "A" in front of our school.
We have more than 45 AVID students that are always ready to learn. We are hoping that more students will be interested in being part of this wonderful program.
Last year we won a grant from the Kern Community Foundation because the hard-working eighth graders, who are now freshmen, wrote an essay explaining why we needed the money.
“I didn’t think we would win but thankfully we did,” replied Antoinette Ward when I asked her about the grant.
This year we have a new projector due to the money we received.
We also won another grant this year from the "Classroom at a Time" program with Channel 29.
"I didn’t think such a thing could happen in such a regular day," said Haley Anderson, who was interviewed on television for the grant.
If there are any guest speakers in the community who would like to volunteer to talk about their college experiences or talk about their career we would really enjoy your company. Also volunteer math tutors can contact our school at 833-1250 and ask for Ms. Mitchell.
Furthermore, I would like to say that I am very thankful for those who are AVID teachers, especially mine!
Natasha Sanchez is an eighth-grade student at Actis Junior High.
Editor's note: According to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, the AVID program works within the regular school day and includes an elective class, trained tutors, an AVID teacher, and a site team of teachers focusing on college preparation, writing, inquiry and collaboration.
AVID serves over 115,000 middle school and high school students at 2,300 schools in 36 states and 15 foreign countries via the Department of Defense Dependents School. U.S. states implementing AVID include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
