The Southwest Voice recently ran an article on the Random Acts of Kindness Club being piloted at Bakersfield High School.
You’ll be glad to know that a similar club, the Good Guys Club, as we call ourselves, is also developing here in the midst of our Southwest community –– more exactly at Stockdale High School.
In our second meeting recently we had Dr. Chuck Wall, founder of the Random Acts of Kindness movement, as our guest speaker.
As the club’s president, I was honored to introduce Dr. Wall to an audience of about 30 people.
Dr. Wall gave the students an inspirational short talk and distributed stickers and his kindness coins (to be passed out after performing a random act of kindness).
One of the BHS club co-founders came to our meeting and shared several of the projects their club is involved in.
Stockdale’s Good Guys decided to work on a kindness theme, and chose as the first one "Opening Doors for Others."
Art Sherwyn, art teacher, tennis coach and artist (check out his art at the upcoming Via Arte at The Marketplace), is the SHS club advisor and is in agreement to this way of thinking.
He challenged each student to bring a new member to the next meeting.
“Eventually,” he said, “we will be recruiting the bullies!”
As a pebble thrown in a lake, we all hope that this great idea spreads out through our high school and throughout our community!
