Tehachapi artist Ron Mead has been painting watercolor for 25 years.
In 1998, three of his watercolors were juried into the Festival of Art competition at the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Ron is a devoted follower of the California Scene watercolor art movement which flourished in California from the 1920s to the 1950s.
A former aerospace engineer, Ron has always been interested in the theory or principles of composition in art. He believes that for a painting to be good art it must not be merely decorative, like wallpaper. It must hold tension in it. For example, it should display a ship against a sea or man against a wilderness. It must also have emotion. Emotion is produced by color or brush strokes which reveal the soul of the artist.
An exhibition of watercolor paintings by Ron is on view at Russo’s Bookstore at The Marketplace in Southwest Bakersfield now through Sep. 30. The exhibit is sponsored by the Bakersfield Art Association, which has an art gallery at the East Hills Mall.
