Parents and students who are looking for some assistance with math should watch “Do the Math,” which will be broadcasted on channels 15 and 20 in the Bakersfield area on Tuesdays and  Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5: 30 p.m. beginning Oct. 3.
Do the Math provides quality math assistance for students in grades four through high school through a broadcast televised tutoring show and a phone bank of math tutors accessed by calling  636-HELP (available now).
The program is sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and other major sponsors like the Panama Buena Vista School District, Bakersfield City School District and corporate sponsors such as Castle & Cooke, Chevron and San Joaquin Bank.
Students who cannot access the broadcast via cable can go to: www.kern.org and click on the “Do the Math” icon.
This very convenient way of getting free math help has been available for four years. Do the Math operates during the school year starting in September.
The Do the Math database tells us information about the number of calls we receive each day, the schools using the service and the area of math for which students most frequently need assistance. This information base shows us that the average time taken for assisting a math caller is seven minutes and the areas most frequently  requested for assistance are fractions and algebra. We average 70-plus calls per day.
Do the Math provides a fun, lively and motivating way for students to become more involved with mathematics and many callers make calling a habit. Some callers even make requests for a certain math teacher to help them.
If you need information about math or about the Do the Math services, call 636-HELP.
