Two Southwest residents and local dance instructors were arrested Friday, Aug. 11, on suspicion of molesting a student at the Civic Dance Center on Brimhall Road. The couple have not been employed at the center since May, according to owner Kevin Trueblood.
Anthony Corriea, 34, and Erica Gwinnell, 24, were arrested after a two-month investigation by the Bakersfield Police Department. According to court records, the alleged abuse occurred between March and May of this year and included instances where Corriea told the girl to send him sexually explicit pictures of herself via e-mail, had several online conversations about sex and asked her to listen to him and Gwinnell having sex over the phone.
Also, in April, the abuse allegedly included a sexual encounter between Corriea and the girl at the Southwest home he shared with Gwinnell. The girl’s mother became aware of the situation after finding a diary entry written by the girl and dated April 22, according to court records. Corriea and Gwinnell have been instructors at the center for about two years and only taught two classes a week. Both came to the center after dancing elsewhere in the country, but with strong professional backgrounds.

Police are looking for at least two people who may have been at a Drift Creek Street home in the Southwest the morning before Robert Baldwin was found dead there. Police are also hunting for things that were taken from the home. Men were seen at Baldwin’s residence in the 7100 block of Drift Creek Street at two different times the morning of  Aug. 2, according to a Bakersfield Police Department release.
Baldwin was found dead in his home later that day after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the house. A man was seen walking away from the front of Baldwin’s residence at 2:55 a.m. The man appeared 20 to 22 years old, about 6 feet tall, thin build, with dark-colored medium-length hair. He was wearing dark clothing, the press release said. He was carrying what is believed to be a black case and was last seen walking north on Horsetail Street. At 9 a.m., a man between 20 to 30 years of age and 6 feet tall was seen leaving the victim’s garage. Baldwin’s 2006 white Ford truck was seen in the driveway at that time, but between 2:45 and 3 p.m. it was spotted parked in the 6100 block of Rocklin Way. A man was seen running from the vehicle and entering the front passenger side of a small SUV. The four-door, red or maroon SUV had tinted windows. It was last seen going west on Indian Gulch Drive. There was no description of the driver, according to the release. The man who entered the passenger seat was in his 20s and between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10. Someone apparently forced their way into the home. In addition to the two puzzle rings that were previously reported missing, guns, jewelry and cash are also missing from the residence.
The following items are missing: a man’s gold “nugget style” wedding band; a woman’s gold wedding band with diamonds and dark-colored stones; one pair of large diamond-stud earrings; a dark brown leather Tommy Hilfiger wallet with attached money clip; $500 in cash; a Ruger Single Six .22-caliber revolver; and an Armscor Precision Rockisland .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, according to the release. The Kern County coroner’s office has determined Baldwin died of a gunshot wound. Investigators have said several fires were started in his home to cover up or destroy evidence.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mark Charmley at 326-3861 or the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111. Confidential information can be given through Secret Witness at 322-4040. The Secret Witness Program is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and filing of a criminal complaint in this case.

Faculty members at Cal State’s biology department report that they’ve worked hard to design a master’s program that will provide their students advance knowledge and training in biology.
Laboratory and/or field research is an integral component of the program, which emphasizes a “hands-on” approach with close faculty mentoring. Research experience will also enable students to hone investigative skill relating to experimental design, implementation, data analysis and interpretation. Students can choose either thesis option (research-based) or non-thesis option for the master’s degree. Graduates with a master’s of science in biology will be prepared to continue studies at doctorate level, to pursue careers in private industry or government labs or to teach at the community college level.
If you would like to pursue the master’s of science degree in biology, you must apply to both the university and biology department for admission. Application materials will be available in September. For more information, call 654-2384.
