“Glaring at me, his face turned beet red. His hand came up and slammed me hard against the kitchen wall. Stunned, I stood there and watched while he grabbed his hat and stomped down the stairs. Slamming the door as he went out, he started "the bomb" and squealed the tires as he flew down the deserted street ...

“So he'd had a temper tantrum and drove off. Calmly, I made myself some toast and cleaned up the tiny kitchen, wondering what this guy I had married was actually like.”

Did you ever trust too much or find your trust betrayed by people you love? Carol Zander Black has captured the ache of realizing her trust was misplaced and rebuilding self-esteem and character from the ashes that follow. Sidney is a compelling and loveable character and her journey is that of countless others coming of age in the second half of the 20th century. The dramatic characters, clean prose and constant tension keep the reader riveted to the page.

Just out of high school, Sidney married the man of her dreams, who took her away to a promised land called Oregon. Too late she realized he dominated by physical and emotional abuse. Experience taught her that her husband would not protect her from the crude comments and advances of his relatives.

Isolated from her family, unable to leave her children and frightened by physical abuse, Sidney began the passage to freedom and self-respect. Her story is filled with mistakes and triumphs, just like everyone else, but this tale is painted by an artist.

Carol Black has lived in various parts of California, Oregon and Florida but has now settled into Bakersfield as her home. Her knowledge of these places adds richness to the descriptions and action.  Because she published through PublishAmerica, Never Ask Permission is available on: Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and Ingram as well as at Russo's. “Never Ask Permission” was featured on the front page of the “Entertainment Section” in The Bakersfield Californian on June 24, 2006, and was No. 3 on the bestsellers at Russo's this summer.

“I learned,” the author says, “that writing a novel, or any other piece, leaves the author a bit vulnerable. You are giving your readers a peek into your brain. That’s not a bad thing.” She added that, “Writing the novel is a lot easier than getting it published. It took four years to write and another four to get it published.”

Black describes the book as, “A work of fiction based on a true story. It includes a bit of adventure, some romance and a little heartache. A novel well worth reading.”

Carol Zander Black is currently writing a prequel describing Sidney's childhood with the working title of “Always Ask Why.”
