Planning is underway for the Sixty Plus Club’s third decade of partnership between Cal State Bakersfield and the local community of retired persons. It officially begins with the club’s annual Opportunities Day, from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Stockdale Room of the CSUB cafeteria, 9001 Stockdale Highway.
Anyone who is retired or is age 60 or over is welcome to attend, said Margaret Southwick, this year’s president. The event is an excellent opportunity for newcomers and continuing members to get information about the club and its activities, she said.
Leaders of the Action Network and Interest Groups will be on hand to explain their activities and their plans for the coming year.
Action Network is made up of numerous smaller groups that offer diverse ways for Sixty Plus members to volunteer their service to the university, ranging from maintenance of the Walter Stiern Rose Garden to assisting at athletic events and the annual Jazz Festival.
Interest Groups is the umbrella for about 15 individual groups geared to specific interests, such as investments, health, fine arts, dining out, learning, philosophy, reading for pleasure, travel and discussion of current affairs, among others.
A general meeting is held each month during the school year. This year’s speakers and programs are being arranged by Ted Murphy, a retired CSUB biology professor and the club’s new vice president.
A small nucleus formed the Sixty Plus Club in 1986. It has continued to grow over the years and now has more than 350 members. In the past 20 years members have contributed more than 40,000 volunteer hours to the university.
Last June, Dr. Horace Mitchell, president of CSUB, presented a President's Award Plaque to the club for 20 years of outstanding service to the university. Southwick and outgoing president, An Chamberlin received the plaque for the group at its installation luncheon.
