I visited Amigo’s restaurant on June 28 around 4:30 p.m., not too late to take advantage of the lunch specials and early enough to avoid the dinner crowd.
Taking a trip to Amigo’s for me was like going to an authentic South of the Border restaurant. There are many Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield, but I’d have to say that Amigo’s has a more festive feel than most, complete with beautiful stained glass lamps over every table and colorful birds and artwork to look at while you’re enjoying your meal.
I was able to make it to Amigo’s while it was happy hour, which is 4 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. During this time, there is a buffet, and for $7.99, you can choose from refried beans, Spanish style rice, fajitas, enchiladas and flour tortillas.
Their domestic beers were $2; imports, $2.50; and regular margaritas, $2.50. You can’t really beat those prices, especially with this Bakersfield heat.
The buffet looked appetizing, but my companions and I chose the lunch specials. I ordered a combination plate ($6.99), which included taco, enchilada, rice and beans. The portions were generous and arrived piping hot. We never had to ask for more chips or salsa because the wait staff was very attentive.
Every time I come to Amigo’s, I am greeted with a smile, and let’s face it, you don’t get that everywhere. The food always arrives in a timely manner and while you wait, I recommend a drink from the bar, especially one of their great margaritas.
Amigo’s is a family style restaurant, but their bar/enclosed patio has become a popular watering hole. On the weekend, the bar is always busy, but a full parking lot doesn’t necessarily mean the dining room is full. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes each time I visit.
The one thing that I would want to see an improvement on is the cleanliness of the restrooms. They would also benefit from some good old bug spray. Other than that, I give Amigo’s a thumbs up!
Amigo’s is located on the corner of District and Gosford. It’s hard to miss this bright orange building.
Go to Amigo’s — you won’t be sorry.

A dirty bathroom could signal a dirty kitchen! Bug spray? Further evidence of unsanitary conditions! How can you recommend that? If critters are no problem, check out LOS TACOS on Wible Rd.! Cheri W.
