You’ve seen the signs all over Bakersfield: “Vacation Bible School, Enroll Now.” “Vacation Bible School starts Monday.”
But just what is Vacation Bible School? And how does a parent choose the right VBS for their child?
Generally speaking, Vacation Bible School is an excellent time to investigate that church you’ve been driving past but haven’t yet visited.
VBS is also the time for churches to showcase their children’s ministry programs.
Most churches use one of a number of national programs available. These Vacation Bible School programs have been developed by experts in both children’s ministry and education.
A variety of activities are planned for children. Each church site trains their staff of volunteers to implement the programs and educate the children about God’s love.
Vacation Bible School centers around the universal themes of love, compassion and forgiveness. Children in VBS participate in simple Bible lessons centered around the theme; sing and dance to upbeat music; make fun crafts; and have a blast with outdoor games that usually end in a water “extravaganza.”
You may be saying to yourself, “I don’t know anyone, how can I be sure of my child’s safety?”
Parents are always welcome at VBS. Churches want to meet the families and view Vacation Bible School as an opportunity to reach out to families new to the area, those looking to rekindle their faith or those seeking information about the Christian faith.
Many VBS sessions begin each day with a high-energy opening ceremony that includes music, skits, prayer and fellowship. Families are encouraged to attend these opening ceremonies. Schedules are available so parents can know where their children are at all times and feel free to stop by for a visit. Most Vacation Bible Schools have a family day that includes musical presentations by the children, entertaining skits, classroom visitations and, of course, food or dessert.
There are many benefits to attending Vacation Bible School. Your children will love it. Many families tell me their children have been waiting all summer for it to begin. Parents have peace of mind knowing their children aren’t sitting in front of the television, playing video games or whining, “Mom, I’m bored!” The children are learning lessons about God’s love and helping your fellow man. Your children will be making good friends and having good, clean, supervised fun in a loving and compassionate environment.
It’s not too late to enroll your children in Vacation Bible School. Call or stop by that church you drive past every day.
