Is your Southwest student on track for admission to the University of California or the California State University campuses?

Kern Community Foundation and eCollege Connect, an intersegmental precollege program, will sponsor the second in a series of local preapplication workshops for juniors and seniors.

On Tuesday, July 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., representatives from the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) will guide students and parents through the preapplication process.

The two sessions will focus on 1) the application process by assessing the completion of the UC/CSU A-G Subject Requirements for admission; and 2) the required “Personal Statement” essay for admission to the University of California campuses.

All first-time participants will begin the application process using their current high school transcripts to self-evaluate their college readiness. Students and parents will match completed high school coursework to the UC/CSU A-G Subject Requirements using the UC centerfold or the CSU application. Students will log onto the UC or CSU Web sites to create an academic portfolio by entering their coursework/grades online. Using the various precollege Internet sites, students can update their personal data at any time. Once entered and saved, student information will download during the open application process in October and November.

For students who participated in the first series of presentations in June, a UC Personal Statement workshop will be provided. UC representatives will offer guidance for those students developing their personal statement essays. Students will receive helpful tips for creating their responses and a list of Web sites they can reference for support. During the session, UC staff will provide comments on any draft essays needing review.

Both workshops will take place on July 18 at California State University, Bakersfield, Walter Stiern Library, Downstairs Computer Lab. To attend the 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. sessions, students/parents are required to RSVP by July 17 by calling me at 832-1500.

This project is being funded through the School-to-Career Initiative of the Kern Community Foundation (KCF). The mission of KCF is to enhance the quality of life for all the people of Kern County by encouraging philanthropy, providing services to the donors and assisting those who serve to meet the needs of the community.
