I work with almost 300 seniors here at Glenwood Gardens who range in age from 70s to late 90s. This being wedding season, I asked a number of them the key to a long, successful marriage.

They shared some great secrets we all should be in on.

Migs was married for 45 years to her husband; a friendly, likable guy who everyone loved.

Maddie said her husband Jim was her “very best friend” and they were married 58 years.

Helen said her husband was raised very similarly to how she was raised. They attended church together and prayed together. If there was a disagreement they took it to the Lord.

Virginia said it was shared interests and mutual respect that kept her and her husband together. They were married for 57 years.

Aileen said what kept her marriage going was that they stayed “crazy in love.”

Carolyn shared two wonderful marriages with two wonderful men who both passed away. She says both were very kind. They both loved to travel and enjoyed their children. One marriage lasted 20 years and the other 38 years.

Lillian says it was shared interests that kept her marriage going strong, and they were married 67 years.

Elizabeth was married for 61 years. They never fought and they always agreed.

Ruth shared 54 years with her Valentine. THey loved each other dearly (and her parents loved him, too).

Wade said he wasn’t allowed to say anything! Wade and his wife are still married today, going on 58 years.

Linus said the secret was tolerance and to give and to take. He and his wife were married 57 years.

Mary Alice said she and her husband always laughed a lot and were in a dance group together. They were married for 62 and a half years.

Alma said her secret to success is not easy to put into words, but she said she never butted into her husband’s business. They were married for 58 years.

Evelyn said she made up her mind that no one else was going to raise her children!

John met his wife in Ireland and fell in love with her at first sight. They were married 51 years and 27 days. He was gloriously happy. He said when they had a disagreement he would always look at her and think, “Is me being right more important than hurting her?” He said he always lost the battles.

Alice and her husband were married for 47 years. It was the “great sex” that did it for them.

I certainly wish I could have this much wisdom and determination. There’s a reason these individuals are a part of what is called “the Greatest Generation.” They made commitments and stuck it out.
