As we think about our learning opportunities during the summer, we are able to remember the many who have gone before us to help establish our freedom in this country.
It's appropriate to reflect about these things as we approach our country's birthday. We will perhaps think of past Fourth of July holidays and those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom with their lives.
The fifth grade enrichment class at Reagan School has been studying significant people in our nation's history, particularly as they relate to the freedoms we enjoy in our country. Examples include Abigail Adams and different presidents including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had a dream of equality for all under the law; known as liberty.
As a culmination to this study, the Reagan fifth grade will perform, “I Remember Martin Luther King Jr., an American Celebration of Freedom,” written by Ruth Roberts, on Thursday, June 29, to a packed multi-purpose room audience. Parents and students will be treated to a rousing of many well known Negro spirituals interwoven with a storyline to illustrate the principles for which Martin Luther King Jr. stood. The play includes excerpts from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech and the entire class will recite these parts.
We encourage you to dream big dreams at this time of year and remember that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Our freedom begins with a good education to help us become a well informed public. May our freedom remain an ever present blessing as we look forward to the Fourth of July this year.
With thankfulness, the fifth grade enrichment class at Reagan Summer School.
