The American Red Cross-Kern Chapter will be offering pet first aid and baby sitters  training as part of its lineup of summer programs.

Pet owners can learn how to help their animals in an emergency. The one-day course will be held on Sunday, June 11, from 2 to 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 13, from 2 to 6 p.m.

The baby sitter class will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 9, and Sunday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

All courses will be given at the chapter’s education center at 225 18th St. Pre-registration is necessary. Participants may register by calling the office at 324-6427 or coming to the agency’s headquarters at 239 18th St. between V Street and Union Avenue. The cost of each class is $45.

Pet first aid includes basic first aid for animals and how to put together a pet first aid kit. The class includes how to perform CPR on your pet and where to receive emergency services for your animals.

In the baby sitter session, local youth 11 to 15 years of age will learn child care skills that can lead to summer employment opportunities. Cost of the class includes course materials, reference book and tote.

Those attending the class will learn how to perform first aid and get professional medical help in an emergency, identify common safety hazards and prevent injuries, make good, responsible decisions and supervise infants through school-age children.

In addition, they will find out how to choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games, perform basic care routines like diapering, feeding and dressing, prepare simple meals and snacks, handle bedtime issues and find and interview for babysitting jobs.

Students attending this program will receive a new nylon bag containing first aid supplies, a flashlight, a fill-in-the-blanks notepad or emergency information and more plus room to carry the course manual and any other needed equipment.
