The fourth annual Kern County High School Powerlifting Meet was held Saturday, April 29, and featured strong showings from Southwest students, including Stockdale's Kenny Shanahan as best lifter in the junior/senior division with a total of 1,380 pounds.
More than 175 boys from 11 county and three out-of-town high schools came to compete in the squat, bench press and dead lift at Stockdale High School. Coach Dave Boyt and his crew have hosted this event for four years.
Students competed in the frosh/soph or junior/senior divisions in specific weight classes. Medals were awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in each weight class. Best lifter awards were given for each of the two divisions. This award is given based on total weight lifted, factoring in body weight. The best lifter in the frosh/soph division was Golden Valley's Brian Morris with 920 pounds in the 148-pound weight class.
Schools also competed as teams. The Liberty A team placed first, followed closely by the Stockdale A team with the team from Ridgeview placing third.
As host school, Stockdale lifters posted strong scores. Taking first place in their classes in the frosh/soph division were Ryan Lay (840 pounds in 132 class), Moses Carbell (945 pounds in 165 class), and Eric McBride (875 pounds in 181 class). First-place winners in the junior/senior division were Jeff Juangco (805 pounds in 123 class), Jeff Jones (1025 pounds in 148 class), Jeremy Ramirez (1125 pounds in 181 class), and Kenny Shanahan (1380 pounds in 198 class).
Also winning medals from Stockdale were Tyler Hernandez, Eric Celedon, Vernell Brothers, Timothy Armstrong and Brian McConnell.
Another Southwest school, Ridgeview, also placed well. Shane Lutrell placed first in his 114-pound frosh/soph class with a 480-pound total. Placing second or third was Jacob Salazar, Gene Blair, Derrick Kernene, Cody Blackburn and Chance Lundstrom.
