Educator of the Month Winner!: Emma Louie

Emma Louie teaches second grade at McAuliffe Elementary School. I was her student teacher, and I cannot even express the gratitude I have for this woman. She is very knowledgeable and makes things interesting for her students. This past year, all of her students seemed to really enjoy being there and were excited to learn new things because she always put a spin on her lessons. I could never thank her enough — no book they make you read in college will ever prepare you for teaching as much as this woman has prepared me.

Mason Trueblood and Sally Wang who dance for Troupe Civic, Civic Dance Center's performing company, were both invited this summer to attend the West Coast Dance Explosion National Finals as members of their Elite program. As part of their program they performed as backup dancers for R&B recording artist Deborah Cox at the Gala night. They also competed for the national title of Mr./Miss Senior West Coast Dance Explosion. Sally was awarded 2nd runner-up out of 32 female dancers. Both dancers received a yearlong scholarship to the dance convention as part of their award. They did a wonderful job representing Bakersfield.

Educator of the Month: Mrs. Bickham

Nominated by Jared Tholl and his Mom

We nominate Mrs. Bickham, a first-grade teacher at Old River Elementary School to be a Southwest Voice Educator of the Month. Mrs. Bickham challenges her student in a fun way. Jared has blossomed academically with her.

This is what Jared wrote on his own: "I like Mrs. Bickham because she makes us smart. When we get marble jar parties we have so much fun. When we get Deputy (student helper) we get to help Mrs. Bickham."

Mrs. Bickham not only cares about the academics of a student but about the students themselves. She is always willing to go to the extra mile.

Youth Athelete of the Month Winner!

Mark Agbalog is a 12-year-old red belt at the academy. He has been practicing tae kwon do for nearly three years now and is the 2007 USA Taekwondo National Champion for his division. Mark is a mild-mannered young man, who strives to be a good role model for the younger members of his team. Recently, USA Taekwondo gave him the honor of having the June Kick of the Month Award for an outstanding back-kick at the Fresno Junior Olympic Qualifier. Mark is currently training three times a day, five days a week for the 2008 U.S. Junior Olympic Taekwondo Nationals in Detroit, Mich., where he will be representing Bakersfield as a California athlete.

This is Morgan's first season with The Bobby Sox. She plays on the 10U team known as the Dirt Queens. She is having fun and learning alot!
