Local gearheads should be stoked after the announcement that Stockdale High School grad Casey Mears has landed a spot with the Richard Childress Racing team. Mears’ contract with Hendrick Racing will be terminated at the end of this racing season. The nephew of racing legend Rick Mears will be joining Bako boy Kevin Harvick on the Childress team, and the hopes here are that the “left-turn” circuit will witness an upturn in Casey’s performance as he drafts off of Kevin’s experience. This is exciting and speaks well of our city’s proud stock car history. Now, if we can just get that track at I-5 and Enos Lane to start burnin’ rubber!

It’s a man’s game and it takes a man to play the game. And there is a man by the name of Manning riding the helm for Super Bowl Champions, the New York Giants. But the toughest man of them all — now vying for a position as a backup quarterback to “the man” at the position — is former quarterback for both Stockdale High and Fresno State, and former No. 1 NFL draft pick David Carr. The unfortunate reason Carr is the toughest guy out there is that he was relentlessly pummeled as quarterback of the Houston Texans for five seasons and came out of it all relatively unscathed. David fought Goliath every Sunday and more times than not came out battered and beaten as he was sacked 262 times while with the Texans and the Carolina Panthers. He was collared a record 76 times during his rookie season (ouch!). Sporting a tremendous attitude and positive outlook his hopes are high to win a coveted backup position with the champs as they embark on the defense of their crown. He reminds one of a boxer who keeps getting up off of the mat. We’re in your corner for you David!

Prep football is right around the corner. Friday nights are a delight for all as the weekend has finally arrived. Kids are gathering with their friends, cheerleaders are dolling up and the boys are putting on the pads to do battle for their school’s honor. Start your weekend off by going out and supporting your alma mater. And if your alma mater is not in the vicinity, hop over to the nearest stadium where you see Friday night lights and support a team. It may be a welcomed journey into the past!

August has always signified a time of change for me. Kids start lining up for buses to take them to a new year of learning. Or parents like Susan Lemons are busy turning their own homes into schoolrooms.

The path along the Kern River becomes filled with outdoor enthusiasts and brave Bakersfield residents eager to hit the sandy riverbed and start training for one of my favorite local events: the Volkslauf.

Even if this is your first time hearing about the mud run that benefits the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots program, Nanette Bonilla’s article might motivate you to take the “Ultimate Challenge.”

This August will signify another change for me: becoming the editor of The Southwest Voice. An avid writer myself, I am excited to be a part of a publication that gives a voice to the people of Southwest Bakersfield. Dana Martin will now dedicate her editor duties to The Northwest Voice, though you’ll see us collaborate on joint projects and marketing events, too.

As your new editor, it is my goal to continue the evolution of The Southwest Voice as a leader in citizen journalism. Of course, the key words are “citizen journalism,” meaning that I can’t do it without you! So, I look forward to reading what you have to say and putting it in The Southwest Voice.

Finding my inner athlete

I first heard about the Volkslauf several years back before my “mommy days.” I thought it would be fun and wanted to enter, but didn’t know how to go about it. Time passed and I forgot about the mud run event entirely. Five or six years later, after two kids and about 35 pounds heavier, I came across an article about the mud run! It explained how this event has inspired people of all ages and fitness levels to get into shape by participating in group training. Reading this article raised my interest in the event, but more importantly I was interested in getting back into shape. I was about to hit 30 and knew I had to make a change in my life.

Over the years I’ve habitually enjoyed the occasional one or 10 beers at barbecues and family events, or while watching football games or boxing matches at home — and of course all the great food that comes along with it. So I was prompted by this story I read to get more information for myself. It was mid-September last year, I didn’t train nor did I register for the event ... there was no way!

Thanks to Leigh Pozas, owner of Total Woman and trainer for the Volkslauf event who kept me on her e-mail list, I was able to get all the information needed to sign up for this year’s 10-week training session. And yes, I’m registered for the Volkslauf mud run. Yikes! It’s pretty intimidating when I think of it today but I’m confident that by week 10 I’ll be ready.

I just completed my first week of training, and what a difference I felt between day one and day four. I really didn’t know what to expect. As I was running down the trail and across the riverbed, huffing and puffing from exhaustion, I was thinking “What did I get myself into?!” Well, I made it through and that was my first accomplishment.

Strength training on day two was a little easier and more my style. There was something new and different at each station as we rotated through the circuit training. On the third day it was the dreadful timed mile. I completed it in 15 minutes and 36 seconds. The last time I did that was in high school! I may have been slow but that was my second accomplishment. I was so sore that night but I worked it out and went back for more. By day four I felt great as I completed another session of strength training. I’m feeling more confident each day and I’m looking forward to the end results. My goal this year is to complete the mile in under 10 minutes, be able to do chin ups, gain muscle strength and melt away those extra inches. But ultimately I want to be in better health and in better shape!

There will be several small accomplishments but surviving the ultimate challenge of Volkslauf Mud Run would be the greatest yet. As I search for the inner athlete, I know people will continue to encourage and inspire me to do my best will surround me. My sister-in-law Valerie has also joined in, so there’s no turning back ... we’re in this together. In just the first week I’ve met many others who have shared their words of encouragement — thanks to everyone supporting me in this challenge! Wish me luck!

Life is hard and full of challenges, most of which we conquer because we have to, not because we want to. But the one we call the “Ultimate Challenge” is one that is tackled by choice, and by people of all walks of life, athletic or not. It is an event that truly inspires life changing decisions. I speak from personal experience!

If you are not familiar with the Volkslauf, let me fill you in. It is an event with no equivalent, a run like no other. The second weekend of October each year, the Marine Corps does an incredible job of planning and executing this event to benefit Toys for Tots, CASA, and Children’s Miracle Network. The 5K or 10K run consists of various obstacles, including mud pits, water canals, walls, ropes, balance beams, tubes, monkey bars, and a host of other interesting obstacles to get over, under, through or across. There are firefighters spraying water from fire trucks and marines yelling at you to keep going. The participants look like “swamp things” from a movie, covered from head to toe in mud and water. Although it is challenging, it is also like being a kid again. It brings out something in you that you may have forgotten, FUN! Vanity is nowhere to be found and personal goals rise to a new level.

I participated in Volkslauf for the first time about eight years ago. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to share the experience with others. What started out as a four-week training program with about 15 women has evolved into a year round program with hundreds participating. We use the pool, the river bed, the running trails, and the obstacle course as our training grounds. No night is ever the same and there is never a chance to get bored or lack motivation.

Each year I see the most diverse group of people come out for this unforgettable training and event. The one thing they have in common is a desire to do something different, shake up their routines, and conquer a new challenge. Lifelong friendships and fitness habits are made and a good time is had by all.

If you would like to join us for training, e-mail me at: TWFitness@yahoo.com for details. Everyone is welcome, men, women, children, athletic or not. The Volkslauf will be held on Oct. 11.

For details on the event, go the their Web site at: www.volkslauf.com. This year, why don’t you make a life changing choice, a choice to live fit and love it.

— Leigh Pozas is the owner of Total Woman Fitness located on Truxtun Extension and in Northwest Bakersfield. She holds a co-ed Volkslauf training at the Truxtun location every year.

With seven months before their first game, Cal State Bakersfield’s baseball program has already hit a home run, thanks to Tom and Barbara Hardt. At a news conference on Aug. 5, the longtime Bakersfield residents stepped up to the plate with a $1 million donation to help construct the university’s baseball training and playing facility.

Baseball is the university’s newest sport and part of the transition to NCAA Division I. The baseball training and playing facility will be located on the southwest corner of campus, near the current Little League facility.

“Barbara and I are pleased to be able to support CSUB and the athletics program,” said Hardt, who received a bachelor’s degree as part of the university’s second graduating class in 1973 and has been building homes in Bakersfield for over 40 years. “We believe this gift will have a positive and lasting impact on the experience of student athletes.

“The core values learned as an athlete — discipline, teamwork, competitiveness, sacrifice – are critical to developing young people into successful contributors to our society. With nine kids and seven grandchildren, we know the importance of education and want to help build a future for all the kids in our community.”

Plans for the $2 million baseball training and playing facility include a playing field, game-quality fan facilities and a state-of-the-art hitting tunnel structure. Construction will take place in phases as funds are raised, starting with the playing field. No state funds will be used for the project.

“The university made a positive impact on me that continues today. It’s a great learning environment, from the classroom to the athletic programs,” Hardt added. “It’s an honor to be able to give back to the school and support it in a very meaningful way. I would encourage others to do the same. Contributions at all levels, both monetary and donations of goods or services, will help complete this project. This is a facility for our community that will be built by our community.”

A baseball advisory committee, to be chaired by Hardt, will make the day-to-day decisions about the training and playing facility construction. The committee will only be able to move forward with project construction as funds are received.

Bakersfield Water Polo Club was started in October 2007, after Jason Gall came from the Ivy League Brown University to become the head coach at Cal State Bakersfield. He brought with him a great deal of experience and success from both the club and collegiate ranks.

Gall, a native Californian, started the club with about 20 kids, mostly junior high and high school aged boys and girls. The club has held consecutive eight-week sessions throughout the year, ending with a 10-week session for the summer. The kids practice twice a week for two hours at a time.

Throughout the season, the club brought teams to tournaments up and down the San Joaquin Valley and into Southern California, including the John Hale Summer Championships in Ontario and the National Junior Olympics in Irvine. The club may not have brought home any medals this year, but the kids have had a lot of fun through practice and competitive experiences that provided them with a solid foundation from which to continue growth and improvement as water polo players. Participation peaked in the summer with over 60 kids participating in games and tournaments.

It is Coach Gall’s hope that, with enough exposure and interest, water polo will make its way into all high schools in Bakersfield. Garces, a private high school on the east side, will be fielding girls and boys water polo teams beginning this fall.

“Some of the kids on the Garces team have been playing water polo for my club since October,” Gall concluded. “It’s great to see that they will have the opportunity to compete at the high school level. Hopefully, this will put the pressure on other high schools to add water polo. My hope is that water polo becomes one of the more popular sports here in Bakersfield.”

This fall, Bakersfield Water Polo Club will be offering a low-cost introduction to water polo to provide a new and different choice for kids who may only participate in activities offered through local recreation centers. This program is open to all school-age children ages 7 and up. All it takes is interest and a desire to learn and have fun!

If you listen closely, you can hear the rumbling of 1,700 football cleats hitting the turf all across Kern County. Yes, folks, it’s football season again and Golden Empire Youth Tackle Football is in full stride as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.

In 1998 with only a vision and a plan, a handful of local men and women set out to create an all-county, inclusive and competitive youth tackle football program. With a lot of hard work, sweat, determination, and help from the community, that dream has come to fruition.

In just nine short years, Golden Empire has become the face of youth tackle football in Kern County and serves as a “true feeder program” for high school football in this community. Golden Empire’s presence can be felt not only on Saturdays, but also on Friday nights as many high school football programs continue to receive the benefit of hundreds of young local GEYF athletes between the ages of 7 and 14 years who have been prepared to play tackle football at the next level.

With youth tackle football programs in Arvin, Bakersfield, Tehachapi, Shafter, and Wasco, Golden Empire continues to be at the forefront of youth tackle football as it remains one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind in the state.

“Golden Empire is one of the finest youth football programs in the state and is a great place to start and build a strong football foundation,” said former NFL All-Pro wide receiver J.J. Stokes.

GEYF was formed to provide a competitive youth tackle football league for elementary and junior high school students. The primary purpose of GEYF is to give the youth of Kern County the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of youth football and cheer, as well as giving them tools to succeed through the friendships and character they acquire while playing on a team. GEYF has turned into a great developmental program for youth athletes of various skills and abilities. It also acts as a feeder program to local high schools as well. Many of the players have gone on to play at colleges around the country and make an impact both on and off the field.

If you know someone who would benefit from receiving this newsletter, please forward it, and then they can follow these short instructions (if you are already receiving this email from me, you don't need to do anything!):

To start receiving this newsletter, you must be a user of our Web site, SWVoice.com. Receiving this newsletter is not the same process as receiving the printed magazine in the mail. Please:

Log on to www.swvoice.com

Click the red box "Register Now" and fill in the form.

Wait through a short email verification

You're finished!

You will begin receiving the newsletter by the next cycle, which is in two weeks (unless something great comes up for me to share--like free Jazz Festival tickets or Elmo tickets, which has happened!).

Next, have you seen the latest issue?

Mark Agbalog is a 12-year-old red belt at the academy. He has been practicing tae kwon do for nearly three years now and is the 2007 USA Taekwondo National Champion for his division. Mark is a mild-mannered young man, who strives to be a good role model for the younger members of his team. Recently, USA Taekwondo gave him the honor of having the June Kick of the Month Award for an outstanding back-kick at the Fresno Junior Olympic Qualifier. Mark is currently training three times a day, five days a week for the 2008 U.S. Junior Olympic Taekwondo Nationals in Detroit, Mich., where he will be representing Bakersfield as a California athlete.

Brian Foley, a 16-year-old Ridgeview High School junior, beat some of the best skeet shooters in the west to win the California State Skeet shooting championship in Los Angeles recently. Foley, a local skeet shooting prodigy, who earlier this year was named to the Junior Second Team All-American squad, hit 399 out of 400 targets over three days to best the field, allowing him to walk away with the high overall championship.

Foley shot a perfect 100 straight in the 12 gauge, and then did the same in the 20 gauge and the 28 gauge before dropping the lone target while shooting a 99 out of 100 in the 410 bore.

“It was work,” Foley said. “I was shooting well and felt good all day. The target that got away just dropped with the wind and I couldn’t find it. It just dove to the ground. But I’m thrilled and honored to win this thing.”

Runner up to Foley, shooting a 398 out of 400, was Ron Hurlbert, another all-American shooter who, like Foley, belongs to the Kern County Gun Club.

Earlier this year, Foley won the Black Gold Skeet Tournament, he was Junior Champ at the Desatoff Open, and he won the elite AAA division at the Kenny Barnes Open and was crowned Junior Champion. All of those tournaments were held at the Kern County Gun Club while the state championships were held at the TripleB Clays shooting facility in El Monte.
