Do you have someone important in your life? Well I do, and it's my mom.

She is not only my mom; she is also my math teacher and my basketball coach. My mom loves me very much because I help her whenever she needs it. My mom can get mad sometimes, but I know that deep inside she's really nice. If she is mad or stressed out, I will help her. Why do I do that? Well she's nice to me and whenever I'm grumpy or down she'll help me.

She is the nicest mom in my world. She always takes care of me and she loves me whenever I need it. She reminds me not to be mad at myself, not to be hard on myself, but to be kind to others. Whenever my brothers, Daniel and Reilley, are fighting I try to help her out with the problem. I also try to help her take care of them whenever I can.

I know my mom cares for everyone in the world. She is my savior, because she got me back into church, and helped me accept Jesus in my life. Even when I get mad at my mom when I'm in trouble, I try to be nice and she'll give me a hug and a kiss. My mom will even tell me, whenever I wake up in the middle of the night, that my dreams aren't real, or that they shouldn't scare me. She'll even pray for me. When I don't understand something that my mom does, she will talk to me and try to explain it to me instead of yelling or screaming.

As my math teacher at Stine School, she helps me to learn math. It's pretty cool, because I can ask her for help with my homework anytime. Sometimes she embarrasses me in class, but I don't care because I'm proud she's my mom. As my basketball coach, she helps me learn the drills and pushes me to be the best I can be at basketball. Our team has already won three out of three games this year. It is fun to have my mom coach our school team and to play basketball with all of my friends.

These are the reasons why I like my mom and why she is significant in my life. She says she'll always love me and care for me. I will always love my mom forever, and ever, and ever.
My name is Raul Villa Lopez. I am in the sixth grade at Stine Elementary on Wilson Road.

My friend Robbie Swoboda died in an airplane. He was my friend for four years.

When I found out I started crying. I couldn't believe that he died. I had to stop crying. I was crying for 15 minutes. My mom said, "Calm down," but I couldn't. I went to school and in class I started crying.

My classmates were also crying because of the sad news.

When I got home, I asked my mom if she could buy me a memory shirt. My mom asked, "How much does it cost?" and I said $30. My mom said it was too much money to spend. I saved my money to buy one.

I went to my friend's funeral. I cried again there. I got back to my school and went to my class. My mom bought me a shirt.

That is everything I'm going to write about.

Editor's note: Twelve-year-old Robert Swoboda was killed Dec. 9 when a small plane piloted by family friend John Edward Lauer, 71, of Bakersfield slammed into an alfalfa field on property owned by Borba Dairies in Southwest Bakersfield.
